Neumayer Station III
Antartica
The Alfred Wegener Institute AWI operates Neumayer Station III in the Antarctic as the starting point for German Antarctic research. In future, the station is to be increasingly supplied with sustainable energy from the sun and wind. A battery storage system must therefore be retrofitted to store electricity, which will be designed in accordance with the regulations of the DNV ship classification society. The battery storage system and control unit are manufactured in two containers in Germany, tested and transported by ship through several climate zones to the Antarctic. On site, the system has to operate in extreme conditions and ambient temperatures ranging from 0°C to -26°C.
As a subcontractor of the general planner METROPLAN, we have taken on the challenging task of planning the technical building equipment. For the electrical part, we are cooperating with our partner
